故宫铜大缸又称“吉祥缸”，清朝时期规定为了防止“吉祥缸”内存水的干涸，内廷“吉祥缸”每日由关防衙门内管领率领苏拉（满语，指宫中的差役）近内添水；外朝“吉祥缸”，每日由宫中机桶处苏拉将缸水添足。总管内务府派司员4人负责管理，每5天检查一次缸内的储水情况。
