印度早期佛教雕刻中就有四天王的形象。在中国的石窟中，四天王作为护法形象也经常出现。在敦煌第二八五窟西壁上画的四天王，头戴花鬘冠，上身穿着甲胄，下身穿战裙，赤脚。南边的二天王，一个是持两股戟的西方广目天王，一个是执矛的南方增长天王；北边的二天王，一个是托塔的北方多闻天王，一个是持剑的东方持国天王。

In the early Buddhist sculptures of India, there were four kings. In China's grottoes, the image of the four heavenly kings as Dharma protectors often appears. The four heavenly kings painted on the west wall of cave 285 in Dunhuang wear garlands and crowns on their heads, armour on their upper bodies, battle skirts on their lower bodies and barefoot. The two heavenly kings in the south, one is the western Guangmu Heavenly King holding two halberds, the other is the southern growth Heavenly King holding a spear, the other is the northern Duowen Heavenly King holding a sword, the other is the eastern one holding a sword.

Most of the four statues of the king of heaven preserved in the temple are works after the Ming Dynasty. These images add more Chinese customs than the early ones. The magic tools in the hands of the four kings have changed, and they are symbolized as wind, tune, rain and obedience. In the south, the king of heaven held a sword to symbolize the wind; in the East, the king of heaven held a lute to symbolize the tune; in the north, the king of heaven held an umbrella to symbolize the rain; in the west, the king of heaven held a snake to symbolize Shun. This kind of king of heaven symbolizes good luck and auspiciousness, which is easier to be accepted by the general Chinese than that of the four great (water and fire) kings in India. Therefore, there are many legends about the king of heaven, but they often confuse the king of heaven with King Kong.
