千手观音又称千手千眼观世音、千眼千臂观世音等。千手观音是是阿弥陀佛的左胁侍，与阿弥陀佛、大势至菩萨或者阿弥陀佛的右胁侍合称为西方三圣。据佛教典籍记载，千手观音菩萨的千手表示遍护众生，千眼则表示遍观世间。唐代以后，千手观音像在中国许多寺院中渐渐作为主像被供奉。千手观音的形象，常以四十二手象征千手，每一手中各有一眼。佛教认为，众生的苦难和烦恼多种多样，众生的需求和愿望不尽相同，因此，就应有众多的无边法力和智慧去度济众生。观世音菩萨在过去无量劫，听千光王静住如来讲《广大圆满无碍大悲心陀罗尼经》时，为利益一切众生，即发誓言，若我当来堪能利益安乐一切众生者，令我即时身千手千眼具足，发誓愿已，应时身千手干眼悉皆具足，变现出如意宝珠、日精摩尼宝珠、葡萄手、甘露手、白佛手、杨柳枝手等。无论众生是想渴求财富，还是想消灾免病，千手观音都能大发慈悲，解除诸般苦难，广施百般利乐。在佛教看来，只要虔诚地信奉千手观音，就有息灾，增益，敬爱，降伏等四大好处。
