韦陀菩萨是佛的护法神（佛教中另外还有一位护法天神韦天将军，相传韦天将军他姓韦名琨，是南方增长天王属下八大神将之一，位居32员神将之首，四大天王每人手下有八神将）。

相传释迦佛涅盘后诸天和众王商量火化遗体，收取舍利建塔供养之事。这时帝释天手持七宝瓶，来到火化场说，佛原先答应给他一颗佛牙。所以他先取下佛牙，准备回去建塔供养。

时有罗刹鬼躲在帝释天身旁，乘人不注意，盗去佛牙舍利。韦驮天奋起直追，刹时将罗刹鬼抓获，取回舍利，赢得了诸天众王的赞扬，认为他能驱除邪魔，保护佛法，世称韦驮菩萨,形像一般是童子面，身披甲胄，手持金刚杵。是『二十诸天』中第十二天。

天目山相传为韦驮尊天菩萨显圣度众之应化道场，故其寺院内专门建有“韦驮殿”。其中昭明禅寺韦驮殿内供奉的韦驮尊天菩萨像，更是迥异于诸方--各地寺院所供均为立像，此处则是硕大无比的坐像。
