铜钟有特钟和编钟之别，特别人的钟叫特钟，能单独的悬在架上。成组依大小次序悬在一个架上的是编钟，大小和它的高低音有关系，有的十六个为一组。现存的钟有西周初期以至春秋战国时期的，战国较盛行。钟用木槌敲击演奏，考古发现的编钟，有槌同时出土。

形制

铜钟的形制有两种，一种是带高的筒形纽，钟的下口两边突出如月牙形；另一种上端的纽是扁的，有的纽作伏兽形，钟下口是平的。

一般钟的花纹两边相同，每边大率有六排（每排三个）共十八个突出的乳。乳的形状有突出如柱的，有突出作螺旋形的。有“乳”的点缀，是钟区别于钲、饶、铎、铃等的特点。
